Melbourne pollen season
Melbourne's grass pollen season runs from October to December. High days usually start in late October or early November. This year's modelled peak is around 16 November (from the 2017-2025 average until this spring's pasture drying is seen by satellite).
What drives it
- Pasture. Ryegrass on grazing land in western and northern Victoria makes most of the pollen.
- Winter and spring rain. A wet winter and spring grow more grass and a bigger season; published work found spring rain explains much of the year-to-year change in season size (de Morton 2011).
- Drying off. The season peaks as the pastures flower and start to dry, which satellites see as falling greenness.
- Weather on the day. Hot, dry, windy days (often northerlies) are high; rain cuts pollen sharply.
